Heading Towards a Cleaner Kashi

With an aim to have a cleaner Kashi, frequent steps are being undertaken to rejuvenate and develop the spiritual capital of India. The sister city pact between Kashi and Kyoto has proved to be a major leap in development of the region. Continuous efforts are being carried out to make the city cleaner and greener than ever before.

Recently, residents of Varanasi, volunteers, students and even Bharatiya Janata Party workers came out to lend a helping hand to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Mission and Namami Gange Project. Shri Narendra Modi’s Clean India movement was taken up in mission mode. From Ganga Ghats to the narrow streets, people wielded broom across length and breadth of Kashi.

Inspired by PM Narendra Modi’s clarion call for a Clean India, many volunteers too took up the cleanliness campaign and brushed away all the filth and stink from near the Ghats. Temsutula Imsong, who hails from Nagaland, and Darshika Shah, a native of Varanasi, started up with a unique initiative that emerged to be a great success.

A campaign named ‘Mission Prabhughat’ was launched a few weeks back aimed at cleaning the Ghats of Varanasi. Imsong along with Shah and team took up the Prime Minister’s cleanliness drive and made it a mass movement inspiring and involving the youth.  The youth brigade turned up on the streets in huge numbers spreading awareness about maintaining cleanliness and hygiene and sanitation in the surroundings.

Even the Prime Minister took note of it and taking to twitter lauded the efforts of the young volunteers who worked day in and day out to make streets and Ganga Ghats free from dirt and stench.

The BJP karyakartas too turned out on the streets in large numbers, took brooms and swept the streets and Ghats and stairs that lead to the river. A total of 86 Ghats were cleaned up under the Swachhta Mission which made it the biggest cleanliness campaign ever.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also lauded the BJP workers who took part in the Swachh Bharat drive and gave a helping hand in making Kashi cleaner city. Once again, on the twitter world, he lauded their attempts.

A special team comprising of 160 members also flew in especially from Surat, Gujarat and formed a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission. Spreading awareness about Prime Minister Modi’s Clean India, they marched throughout the city and cleaned up the muddle from Saamneghat to Durgakund. They took the cleanliness crusade to the Railway station and other Ganga Ghats as well. The team would hold several such drives throughout the month to educate the local people about hygiene and importance clean surroundings.

Assuming their moral responsibility, State Bank of India too decided to educate youngsters at school level about importance of cleanliness. The bank has worked upon an innovative way to educate the gen-next. Cartoon films highlighting importance of cleanliness would be shown to the school children. Noting the significance of maintaining proper toilets, sanitation and sewage disposal facilities, the State Bank of India along with Sulabh International have decided to spend a lump sum of Rs. 20 crores to build up proper sanitation facilities in about 35 primary schools.

Numerous social institutions also paid heed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cleanliness drive and joined in for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Organizations like the ICAI and many other NGOs supported the mass movement and formed a part in revitalizing Varanasi.
