On the afternoon of Sunday, 26th August 2012 Shri Narendra Modi addressed the Gujarat BJP Mahila Morcha meeting in the state capital Gandhinagar. Shri Modi highlighted the development that had taken place in Gujarat over the last decade and spoke out against the mindset of the Congress to curb free speech and make shallow promises to the people.

Shri Modi reminded the gathering that elections have a very important place in the functioning of a democracy and said it is the duty of the people to be ‘Lok Shikshaks’ (educators of society) of democracy. He believed that a vote is an agent of change and that nobody must underestimate the value of his or her vote. He urged the people to train young students, particularly of 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 standards on the functioning of democracy, elections etc.

Shri Modi stated that criticism and the ability to hear different viewpoints are the hallmark of democracy and expressed shock that the Twitter and Facebook profiles of those speaking against the Congress were blocked! He narrated that he himself has faced endless vilification but 12 years not but has always risen to the occasion and taken it in the spirit of democracy.

He cited another instance of how a TV channel was served circulars only because they brought out the reality of the ‘Ghar Nu Ghar’ Scheme of the Congress. The Chief Minister further reminded the Congress that words of democracy do not suit them and that Smt. Indira Gandhi was comprehensively rejected at the hustings when she tried to destroy democracy.

Talking about the Congress campaign of ‘Disha Badlo, Dasha Badlo’, the Chief Minister said that it is due to the Congress’ Disha (direction), the Dasha (condition) of the country had suffered for long and that Gujarat will not let this atmosphere of Durdasha (givers of poor condition) enter the state. The Chief Minister urged the Mahila Morcha to prepare for the elections by focusing at the booth level and understanding the changed electoral map after delimitation.

Shri Modi spoke about the several instances of progress taking place in Gujarat. He said that from 1960-2000, successive Congress governments added a total of 10 lakh houses in 40 years but in the last decade, a total of 16 lakh houses have been built for the people. He added that during the ongoing Garib Kalyan Melas, 4.5 lakh additional houses will be given to the poor. He shared that the Gujarat Government is giving plots to all BPL families from 0-16 list and are giving the similar benefits for BPL families in list 17-20 and this is for the first time this is happening anywhere in India.

Mincing no words, Shri Modi affirmed that the Government’s sole determination is to ensure the development of Gujarat and ensure that its women lead a peaceful and happy life. He narrated the efforts steps taken by the state to turn the drought situation into an opportunity to ensure better progress be it by growing grass alongside the Narmada or providing relief measures. He also prayed to Almighty that Gujarat be blessed with more rain.

The meeting was well attended by BJP workers and senior leaders including National BJP Vice President Shri Purushottam Rupala, Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat Smt. Smriti Irani and Cabinet Minister Anandiben Patel. The Mahila Morcha felicitated Shri Modi and there was an atmosphere of enthusiasm during the entire programme.
