On the occasion of National Sports Day, Shri Narendra Modi met Olympic Medalist Mr. Gagan Narang. Every year, 29th August is celebrated as National Sports Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.

Gagan Narang is the ace shooter who did India proud when he won the Bronze Medal in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle Event at the 2012 London Olympics on 30th July. That time, Shri Modi was among the first ones to congratulate him. He had Tweeted, “Great news from London! Congratulations to Gagan Narang for bringing home an Olympic medal!” Over the last decade, Shri Modi has made a determined effort to promote a culture of sports among the people of Gujarat. He has always had a vision to make sports into a mass movement that can contribute to the development of Gujarat. Just a few days ago he launched the Swami Vivekananda Women Chess Meet in which over 4000 women players including specially abled players played chess under a single venue. World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand attended the Meet. He congratulated under 19-cricket team for lifting the ICC Under-19 World Cup a few days ago.
