Shri Narendra Modi's unwavering belief in participative governance and direct engagement has drawn an equally committed response from the citizens. The survey on the ‘Narendra Modi Mobile App’ on the government’s decision of 500 and 1000 Rupee notes ceasing to be legal tender has drawn an unprecedented and historic response. Launched on 22nd November 2016, the survey has seen almost a million citizens participating, in just over 100 hours, and sharing their opinion, ideas and suggestions. In terms of direct democracy, this is perhaps the largest such exercise in the world.

A detailed analysis of the responses received in the first 24 hours, to each of the questions, was published here. The two principal questions asked in the survey were as below:

  • What do you think of the government’s move to demonetize old 500 and 1000 Rupee notes? The answers ranged from ‘Very Good’ to ‘Very Poor’ on scale of 5.

  • Did you mind the inconvenience faced in our fight to curb corruption, black money, terrorism and counterfeit money? The answers to this question ranged from Yes to ‘Not at All’, on a scale of 3.

These answers have now been aggregated at the updated participation of 9.63 lakhs (responses received in 100 hours). In what is also perhaps a first, the responses to these questions have been analyzed in depth for each state and union territory of India – in total 36. The salient points of the analysis are as below:

    • More than 9.6 lakh people have now participated in the survey and given their detailed opinions. In terms of sample size for assessing national mood, this is significantly higher than anything attempted ever before.

    • The national average of people supporting the demonetization move as either good or very good is 92%.

    • 91% of the those polled say that they absolutely do not mind the inconvenience or even if they faced inconvenience, they think it is still worth it for the cause of fighting corruption and black money.

    • States like West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh are above the national average when it comes to supporting the move of demonetisation.

    • More than 85% of the people in 35 of the 36 states and union territories say that either don’t mind the inconvenience, or even they have faced inconvenience, it is still worth it for the national cause of fighting corruption and black money.

The highlights of the responses to the questions in some states is as below:

The decision the Government took on 8th November is inspired by the collective will to take India to new heights of progress. It was high time we uprooted the evils of corruption and black money, which were hampering the growth of India and preventing us from realizing our full potential.  The ability of the people of India to withstand and overcome short-term pain for long term gain has humbled the government and further strengthened its resolve to work for the development of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has personally written to each of the participants in the survey and thanked them for taking out time for sharing their valuable insights and opinions.  Many of the suggestions shared on the app have formed important inputs in framing the government response in the last few days. This has been a novel manifestation of participative governance, which can propel India to new heights of progress. We request the citizens to keep the dialogue going!
