On the occasion, the Chief Minister observed silence to pay heartfelt tributes to late Dr.Verghese Kurien, originator of the white revolution, on his shocking demise. He said that Dr. Kurien worked devotedly for six decades in the field of milk production, co-operative sector, value addition in dairy industry and cattle-rearing for earning a name to India. Speaking to a large number of farmers on the occasion the Chief Minister said that unfortunately the cattle-rearing sector has been neglected in India. “Milk productivity per animal in India is lower comparing to other parts of the world. Speaking about the state’s initiatives in the field of cattle-rearing Mr. Modi said, “Shaurashtra did not have cattle-feed factories and there was a shortage of cattle-feed at cheaper rates. The state government has come up with a Rs.30 crore scheme for setting up of a cattle-feed factory in co-operative sector.” The government has also set up Kamdhenu University to create a pool of manpower for scientific cattle-rearing in Gujarat. “We examined and treated lakhs of animals by organizing around 112 cattle health fairs”, he added. He asked the farmers to start a campaign for desilting of dams, lakes and other water-conservation bodies with a view to make available water during difficult times and for the cultivation of fodder. He also asked them to go for scientific experiments for increased milk production and cattle-rearing.
