India’s “Concert Economy”: A Rising Entertainment Powerhouse on the Road to the 2036 Olympics
January 29, 2025

From Scarcity to a Thriving Concert Culture

For years, India lacked the necessary infrastructure to host large-scale international concerts. While Bollywood music thrived domestically, the global concert culture largely bypassed India due to inadequate venues, bureaucratic challenges, and logistical hurdles. Unlike cities such as London, New York, or Singapore, India struggled to attract international artists because of a lack of world-class stadiums, difficulties in obtaining event permissions, and unorganized event management. Even when global stars did perform, concerts often suffered from poor crowd control, sanitation issues, and technical failures, leaving both artists and audiences dissatisfied.

However, in recent years, a transformational shift has taken place. India’s live music scene has evolved significantly, with state-of-the-art venues, smoother event permissions, and better crowd management. The government, the private sector, and entertainment stakeholders have recognized the economic power of large-scale concerts, leading to a nationwide push to enhance infrastructure. This development aligns with what Prime Minister Narendra Modi has termed the “Concert Economy”, a concept that envisions live entertainment as a major economic force driving tourism, employment, and international recognition.

How India is Managing Large-Scale Events Efficiently

Historically, previous governments were cautious in scheduling IPL matches during election years, often prioritizing national security concerns over hosting the tournament within the country. The extensive police deployment required for elections meant that authorities were reluctant to commit additional resources for IPL matches.

For instance, in 2009, under Home Minister P. Chidambaram, the UPA government denied security clearance for the tournament, leading to the entire IPL season being shifted to South Africa. A similar situation arose in 2014, when a portion of the tournament was relocated to the UAE to avoid overlapping with the Lok Sabha elections. These decisions reflected the former governments’ approach, where elections were prioritized over large sporting events.

However, in recent years, a shift in strategy has emerged. With India strengthening its security and event management capabilities. This marks a significant step forward in India's ability to simultaneously manage high-profile sporting and cultural events, a skill set that will be critical as the country gears up for the 2036 Olympics.

The Role of Infrastructure in Global Concert Tours and Mega Events

A nation’s ability to attract and conduct major international concerts and sporting events is directly linked to its infrastructure. Global superstars prefer destinations that offer world-class stadiums, high-tech arenas, excellent logistics, and efficient security systems. Countries like the United States, the UK, and Japan have long dominated this space, thanks to renowned venues such as Madison Square Garden, the O2 Arena, and Tokyo Dome.

Until recently, India lacked comparable infrastructure. However, India has rapidly closed this gap, with the construction of modern arenas, improved transportation networks, and better event regulations. The result? More international artists now see India as a viable stop on their world tours.

This same development is playing a crucial role in India's preparation for hosting the 2036 Olympics. The government has accelerated the development of multi-purpose stadiums, high-capacity venues, and improved urban mobility, ensuring that India's sporting and entertainment infrastructure meets global standards.

The Economic Acceleration of Concert Culture

India’s concert industry is not just about entertainment—it’s an economic powerhouse. The industry generates billions in revenue and stimulates sectors like hospitality, tourism, transportation, and retail. A Bank of Baroda report estimates that India’s annual concert and live entertainment expenditure stands between ₹1,600-2,000 crore, with enormous room for growth.

A compelling case study is Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival, which generated ₹100 crore in revenue from an ₹11 crore investment, showcasing the potential of large-scale events to drive local economies. The concert boom is also creating thousands of jobs in event management, security, media production, and technical operations, further contributing to India's economic expansion.

Recognizing this, PM Modi has encouraged both state governments and private investors to capitalize on the concert economy, ensuring that India remains a prime destination for international events.

The Boom: International Artists Now Flocking to India

The impact of India’s improving infrastructure and growing economic focus on concerts is already evident. Over the past decade, global superstars have increasingly chosen India as a tour destination.

Artists such as Coldplay, Bryan Adams, Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Maroon 5, the Jonas Brothers, and Post Malone have performed in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, drawing massive crowds. Upcoming concerts by 21 Savage, Green Day, and Shawn Mendes further confirm that India is now a major stop on global music tours.

Notably, ticket sales for these concerts have broken records, with many events selling out within hours. Online ticketing platforms like BookMyShow report an unprecedented demand for live music events, further proving India’s viability as a global concert hub.

India’s “Gig Economy” and Its Growing Global Influence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent reference to Coldplay while urging India to “go big on the gig economy” showcases the growing economic and cultural significance of live music. While “gig economy” traditionally refers to freelance and short-term jobs, Modi used the term in its original musical sense—referring to live performances.

By highlighting the economic benefits of large concerts, Modi Ji emphasized the job creation, tourism boost, and infrastructural development that live events bring. This vision aligns with India’s broader goal of becoming a global entertainment hub, with concerts playing a key role in economic and cultural diplomacy.

India’s Path to the 2036 Olympics: How Concert Infrastructure is Paving the Way

India's steady rise in the entertainment sector is also shaping its preparation for the 2036 Olympics. The very infrastructure being developed is laying the foundation for India's ability to host the world’s biggest sporting event.

The construction of large-scale stadiums, improved public transportation, enhanced crowd control systems, and upgraded security infrastructure is creating a world-class event ecosystem. These developments ensure that by 2036, India will be fully equipped to host an Olympics on par with cities like Tokyo, London, and Paris.

Furthermore, the experience gained in handling international concerts and IPL tournaments has fine-tuned India's event management expertise, proving that the country can seamlessly organize global-scale events.

Conclusion: India’s Future as a Global Entertainment and Sporting Hub

India, once overlooked for world tours, is now a priority stop for international artists and event organizers.

With massive investments in venues, technology, and event logistics, and with India gearing up for the 2036 Olympics, the “Concert Economy” and “Gig Economy” are not just shaping the entertainment industry—they are setting the stage for India’s rise as a global leader in mega-events.

The next decade will witness bigger concerts, larger sporting events, and an even stronger live entertainment industry, firmly establishing India as a dominant force in the global entertainment and sports landscape.
