ICMR-NIV Centre of One Health at Nagpur

Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi has taken an important step towards the achievement of One Health goal through establishment of ICMR-NIV Satellite Centre of One Health at Nagpur with Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University as the knowledge partner. The University has provided 4.0 hectare of land for the establishment of the Centre. The Centre is being established at Seminary Hills, Nagpur, with an initial outlay of approximately Rs. 98.5 crore. The University shall be benefited by setting up of the Centre by use of resource laboratories, technical facilities and through research projects of common interest. The Centre will emphasize on identification of novel and unknown zoonotic agents, capacity building and human resource development and networking with global organizations working in the field of One Health. Establishment of Centre of One Health will beneficial in controlling zoonotic diseases and in extending the benefits of better health to the common public of the country.

One health is “an approach to designing and implementing programmes, policies, legislation and research in which multiple sectors communicate and work together to achieve better public health outcomes”.  Multiple sectors involved are Public health, Animal health, Wild life and Environmental health. This essentially means interdisciplinary approach involving above components with the ultimate goal of better public health.

The triage of zoonotic diseases (transmitted from animals to humans), antimicrobial resistance and food-borne infections act as multifaceted causes of human and animal diseases. Efforts by just one sector cannot prevent or eliminate these health problems; hence a well-coordinated One Health approach in humans and in animals is required.

The importance of zoonotic diseases can be gauged from the fact that 64% of pathogens causing infectious diseases are zoonotic in nature. Emerging infections like Nipah and Zika virus are new threats and endemic infections like leptospirosis and Japanese encephalitis affect our country year after year.

The One Health (OH) approach to manage endemic and emerging epidemic threats of zoonotic diseases is based upon an appreciation of the need for human, animal (including wildlife), and environmental experts to work in coordination in order to better prevent and control these diseases. It is therefore a need of the hour to establish a dedicated centre for research in One Health and enhance national capacity to deal with epidemics of all potential zoonotic diseases that may affect the region and the country.
