The unanimous choice of Mr. Ganpat Vasava, legislator from Mangrol, a reserved constituency for tribal, as the Gujarat Assembly Speaker is a rare and unprecedented event, Chief Minister Narendra said here today.

Mr. Modi thanked all the members in the Assembly for unanimously selecting a young, sociable, sincere, suave son of a tribal family to the august post, setting a high tradition in parliamentary democracy, particularly it being in the year of the state’s golden jubilee. The leader of the House also congratulated Mr. Vasava.

Talking about Mr. Vasava’s political career, Mr. Modi said that not many people knew his contributions as a silent constructive social worker and social reformer, motivating the tribal community to go to schools, take part in sports and stay away from addictions.

As an MLA too, Mr. Modi recalled, Mr. Vasava’s conduct for the two successive terms has been exemplary. The House feels proud to elect such a worthy person to the chair. He wished the Gujarat Legislative Assembly will in his chairmanship take the debates to new democratic heights and set many new traditions. In an obituary reference to the late former Speaker Mr. Ashok Bhatt, Mr. Modi paid rich tributes to the departed soul for his long political career.

The Chief Minister thanked Prof. Mangaldas Patel for conducting the business of the House, even though he was not keeping well.
