Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan left an invaluable mark in India's history & continues to inspire us. My tributes on his birth anniversary: CM

Shri Narendra Modi paid tributes to Loknayak Jayprakash Narayan on his birth anniversary. Shri Modi Tweeted, “Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan left an invaluable mark in India's history & continues to inspire us. My tributes on his birth anniversary.”

Loknayak Jayprakash Narayan (or JP as he was popularly known) has occupied a central place in the history of modern India. He was a freedom fight and a social activist who resisted all forms of injustice and authoritarianism in his decades of being active public life. JP participated in the Quit India Movement and immersed himself in the service of the people after Independence.

JP returned to national Centre stage in the early 1970s when he resisted Mrs. Indira Gandhi’s authoritarian rule tooth and nail. He inspired student movements in Bihar and in Gujarat and finally gave a call for Sampoorna Kranti. He was arrested during the Emergency.

It was JP who became the guiding force behind the formation of the first non-Congress Government in the history of India under Shri Morarji Desai in 1997. JP passed away in 1979 and was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1999.

Loknayak JP a major source of inspiration for Shri Narendra Modi

Shri Narendra Modi was a youngster during the turbulent 1970s but it was the call of Bharat Mata that drew him towards working for the nation and among the people who deeply inspired him was none other than Loknayak JP.

During the Navnirman Movement when student agitations were brewing against corrupt Congress regime in Gujarat, Loknayak JP remained a  guiding force during the entire movement.

In his speeches, Shri Modi has often spoken about the close ties JP had with Gujarat be it his association with Mahatma Gandhi, influencing a movement here or his role in making a Gujarat as the nation’s Prime Minister in 1977.

Today JP lives on through his ideals and his life long quest against authoritarianism makes him a democrat to the core!
