On the evening of Tuesday 25th December 2012 Shri Narendra Modi addressed the people at the launch of the Kankaria Carnival 2012. Shri Modi spoke at length about the development of the Kankaria Lakefront and affirmed that a day is not far when it will become the ‘Kid’s Capital of the Nation!’

He said that those studying the development in the economic, social and tourism spheres must take note of the development in the Kankaria Lakefront. He said, “Its development journey has been unique. Till yesterday no one came here but now so many people come.”

Shri Modi thanked the people on the record victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2012 Gujarat Elections and pointed out that this is his first function after the conclusion of the elections.  He added that he would leave no stone unturned in upholding the trust that has been placed by the people of Gujarat and that the development journey of Gujarat will be carried forward to greater heights in the coming years.

Speaking about the Kankaria Carnival, Shri Modi said that since 2008 the Kankaria Carnival commences on 25th December, which is the birthday of former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He described the Kankaria Carnival as a ‘Bal Utsav’ (a celebration of the spirit of our children).

Shri Modi stated that one notable aspect of the Kankaria Carnival is that it has given an opportunity to children from the slum area. He said, “These children have immense talent. Someone must bring that talent out. They must get an opportunity.” He added that for years, it is these children who have been the carnival’s star attraction. He pointed, “If they get an opportunity they can do wonderful things. Their self-confidence rises and it even reflects in their ordinary lives. It gives them renewed strength.”

Shri Modi talked about the emerging neo-middle class in Gujarat and how the Kankaria Lakefront is of immense importance in their lives. He said, “their dreams are like that of the upper classes but their condition is far behind. We are focusing on how to realize their dreams. Kankaria is an important place for them. To fulfill their dreams they had nowhere to go now they can come here with their children.”

Shri Modi envisioned Kankaria Lakefront to be a Kids Capital for the nation. He said, “In the Kid’s City people can come and experience their dreams, they can live them. It will enhance their self confidence.”

He lauded the people for their efforts to keep the Lakefront clean. He declared, “The Lakefront may have been built by the AMC but it is the people who have preserved this!”

A large number of people were present on the occasion.

November 21, 2024

Prime Minister visited the Indian Arrival monument at Monument Gardens in Georgetown today. He was accompanied by PM of Guyana Brig (Retd) Mark Phillips. An ensemble of Tassa Drums welcomed Prime Minister as he paid floral tribute at the Arrival Monument. Paying homage at the monument, Prime Minister recalled the struggle and sacrifices of Indian diaspora and their pivotal contribution to preserving and promoting Indian culture and tradition in Guyana. He planted a Bel Patra sapling at the monument.

The monument is a replica of the first ship which arrived in Guyana in 1838 bringing indentured migrants from India. It was gifted by India to the people of Guyana in 1991.
