On the evening of Wednesday 3rd October 2012 Shri Narendra Modi welcomed the declaration of election dates by the Election Commission.
Shri Modi Tweeted, “Elections are the biggest festival of democracy. We will take part with true festive spirit. I welcome announcement of the poll dates.”
On Wednesday (3rd October) the Chief Election Commission announced the election schedule for Gujarat. Polls in the state will be held in 2 phases – first phase covering 87 seats will be held on 13th December 2012 and the second phase covering 95 seats on 17th December 2012. The counting of votes will be held on 20th December 2012. Voting would take place through Electronic Voting Machines (EVM).

Phase 1 predominantly covers South Gujarat, Saurashtra and parts of Ahmedabad district while Phase 2 covers Central Gujarat, North Gujarat, Kutch and large parts of Ahmedabad district.
The term of the incumbent Assembly ends on 17th January 2013. Even in 2007 the state witnessed 2 phase polls.
