Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said that India has become a centre of global investment, even as the success of economic reforms is evident.

Addressing the 46th convocation of the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIMA) here in presence of Gujarat’s Governor Dr Kamlaji and Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Dr Singh said that our economic reforms since 1991 were aimed at unleashing the animal spirits of Indian enterprise and wellsprings of Indian creativity. We are emerging as a global centre for information technology, research, development and innovations.

He said that our companies and entrepreneurs now compete and invest in the global market place. They are bringing new products and services within the reach of the common man. While we should take pride in our successes, he said, we still have to deal with the problems of mass poverty, hunger, disease and corruption. We have to create food and energy security for out teeming millions. Similarly, he said, companies undertaking Greenfield projects cannot see their factories and units as oases, cut off from the needs and interests of the community around them.

Dr. Singh said that India’s greatest strength as a home for management education is our spirit of “can-do” and out ability to deal with any situation. There is no better training ground for Indian managers than India itself. If you can succeed in India, he said, you can success anywhere in the world!

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today called for greater participation of institutes like Indian Institutes of Managements (IIMs) in ‘Public Policy Management’. He said the policies governing the nation or the states have for long made great impact on the lifestyle of the people. As such the IIMs have been engaged in managerial skill development.

Congratulating the IIMA graduates, he said, it has created for itself a unique model in management education. There is need to connect the governments at the Centre or in the States and the business community with the institute to help them leave a mark at the global stage.

Commenting on the contribution of world-class institutes like IIMs and IITs in empowering the youth power. He said that India is endowed with the world’s largest youth resources, with a potential to ensure India shines at the global stage. The need is to convert this youth force into global workforce.

Mr. Modi regretted the percentage of higher education in the country stood at only 11 per cent, while in developed nations it is 55 per cent and even the Asian average is 23 per cent. Hardly 89 per cent of the youth in the age group of 18-23 get the chance to get higher education. There is an urgent need to let them link the youth power with opportunities in higher education.
