Gujarat Chief Minister arrives in Tokyo on a four-day invitation of Japanese Government

Narendra Modi, leading business delegation from Gujarat, to attend seminars under the aegis of Jetro, Parliamentary Friendship League

Ahmedabad, Sunday: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, leading a high level delegation of top industrialists and businessmen of the state, reached Tokyo airport tonight to a warm welcome. Those present at the airport included India’s Ambassador to Japan S. Panda, Japan’s protocol officers, among others.

Beginning tomorrow, a whistle-stop schedule awaits Mr. Modi, on a four-day official visit to Japan on a special invitation of the Japanese Government. His itinerary includes attending as many as 44 functions, including three seminars and one roundtable conference. He will take a ride on a Bullet Train from Tokyo to Hamamatsu.

Mr. Modi is scheduled to meet Japan’s Deputy Prime Minister Katsuya Okada, Economy Trade and Industry Minister Yukido Edano, Land Transport and Tourism Minister Yuichiro Hata and Foreign Affairs Minister Koichiro Gemba, besides former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

On Monday, he will address a seminar on investment to be held under the aegis of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), to be attended by corporate heads of Japan and India having their presence in Japan.

On Tuesday, he is scheduled to address a series of meetings with top honchos of Japan’s financial institutions and industrial houses, notably Bank of Japan, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Japan Business Federation Kedianren and Mizuho Finance.

The Japanese Government is keen to build relationship with Gujarat as partner to latter’s development, as they have participated as ‘partner country’ twice during biennial Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit (VGGIS). In the backdrop of increasing mutual relationship between India and Japan in economic and industrial fields, Japan’s partnership with Gujarat emerging as the growth engine of Indian economy should become a major Asian force in the 21st Century.

On July 24, meetings have been arranged in Tokyo between Mr. Modi and members of Japan India Parliamentary Friendship League, India Centre Foundation and Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industries Chairman Takashi Kitamura.

From July 25, Mr. Modi will visit Hamamatsu, Osaka and Folte. This is for the first time that the head of a province has been officially invited by the Japanese Government to visit their country. This is Mr. Modi’s second visit as the Chief Minister to Japan, the first being in 2007.
