Shri Narendra Modi addressed large public meetings at Keshod (Junagadh district) and Babra (Amreli district) on the morning of 6th December 2012. Shri Modi raised pointed questions on the cotton export ban and providing relief in the wake of late rainfall to Dr. Manmohan Singh and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and asked them to answer the people of Gujarat when they visit the state to campaign in the coming days.

The Chief Minister urged the people to vote for the BJP and affirmed that they are asking for their vote on the basis on the development over the last 11 years. Taking a dig at the Congress for a lack of vision and leader Shri Modi said, “In Congress everyone is saying ‘I am captain.’ Sonia Ben should explain who the captain is when she comes here.”

Shri Modi affirmed that in the coming days Dr. Manmohan Singh, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Mr. Rahul Gandhi would be visiting Gujarat and added that he has some pointed question for them, which they should come prepared to answer.

Shri Modi questioned the Prime Minister, “Gujarat’s farmer is asking you, why did you ban cotton export that too when prices were highest?” He said that Gujarat is known for its cotton production all over the world and shared that when he took over as CM in 2001 Gujarat produced 23 lakh bales of cotton whereas the today the number has tremendously increased to 1 crore 23 lakh bales. Yet, the UPA banned cotton export causing a loss of Rs. 7000 crore to the farmers.

He spoke about the Gujarat Government’s New Textile Policy and declared that there will be textile parks wherever cotton is grown. “I have a 5F policy: farm, fibre, fabric, fashion, foreign.” Shri Modi pointed out, adding that like cotton even ready made garments will be produced from Gujarat. The Chief Minister shared that after agriculture, if there is any sector that generates maximum jobs it is textile industry.

The Chief Minster’s next question to the Prime Minister and the UPA Chairperson was, “Are you showing affection to the farmers only due to polls?” He recalled that when the initial monsoon spell in Gujarat was poor, Central Ministers came to Gujarat, held elaborate meetings and promised assistance but its been 6 months and not a penny has come from the Centre. “Gujarat’s farmers want answers form you!” he asserted.

Shri Modi said that the Congress has kept Gujarat in darkness. He recalled the days when he people would ask for electricity during the evening meals but over the years the Jyotigram Yojana has transformed the power sector. The Chief Minister shared that during the Congress years the power subsidy given to farmers was at Rs. 300 crore while now that figure stands at Rs. 3000 crore. He also recalled that the Congress used to blame the farmers for power thefts and now even power thefts have become history in Gujarat. “In the name of the farmers the Congress is out to mislead the people of Gujarat” he affirmed.

The Chief Minister declared that these elections are not about electing an MLA but about deciding the future of Gujarat. The public meetings were well attended by people across all ages and cutting across all sections of society.
