PM Modi’s Day at Vantara: Healing the Wild with Hope
March 05, 2025

On March 4, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Vantara, a groundbreaking wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation center located in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Spanning over 3,500 acres within the Reliance Jamnagar Refinery Complex, Vantara stands as the world’s largest facility of its kind, offering sanctuary to more than 1.5 lakh rescued, endangered, and threatened animals across over 2,000 species. Vantara is not merely a shelter but a testament to India’s evolving commitment to ethical animal welfare and ecological sustainability.

During his visit, PM Modi highlighted the center’s compassionate approach, particularly its efforts to rescue and rehabilitate elephants, while urging society to embrace kindness and responsibility toward wildlife. One of the most poignant aspects of PM Modi’s visit was his focus on the stories of rescued elephants at Vantara.

PM Modi shared harrowing accounts of their plights: one elephant had endured an acid attack, another was blinded by its own mahout (caretaker), and yet another had been struck by a speeding truck. At Vantara, these elephants are treated with unparalleled dignity and kindness. The facility’s Elephant Care Centre, touted as the world’s largest elephant hospital, is equipped with cutting-edge technology tailored to their needs.

From hydraulic surgical platforms and specialized lifting equipment to custom-designed endoscopes, the center ensures stress-free medical procedures. A hydrotherapy pond alleviates arthritis, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber aids wound healing, and a specialized foot care unit addresses chronic issues. Ayurvedic treatments and acupuncture further enhance their recovery, reflecting a holistic approach to rehabilitation. PM Modi praised this meticulous care, noting that it exemplifies a model of coexistence between humans and nature.

Vantara’s commitment extends beyond elephants. The sanctuary has rescued over 200 elephants, 300 large felines (including leopards, tigers, lions, and jaguars), 300 herbivores like deer, and more than 1,200 reptiles such as crocodiles, snakes, and turtles. Each animal’s story reinforces Vantara’s mission to provide not just survival, but a life of dignity.

A defining feature of Vantara is its chain-free philosophy. Unlike traditional zoos or enclosures that restrain animals, Vantara prioritizes a stress-free environment. The sanctuary’s medical infrastructure is equally revolutionary. Its 1 lakh square foot hospital and medical research center boast advanced tools like MRI, CT scans, X-rays, ultrasound, endoscopy, and a blood plasma separator.

During his tour, PM Modi witnessed an Asiatic lion undergoing an MRI and a leopard receiving life-saving surgery after a highway accident. The facility includes specialized departments for wildlife anesthesia, cardiology, nephrology, dentistry, and internal medicine, staffed by a global team of veterinarians

PM Modi’s visit was more than a ceremonial inauguration; it was a vivid demonstration of Vantara’s mission and India’s broader role in global conservation. His interactions with the animals were both heartwarming and symbolic. He fed Asiatic lion cubs, a white lion cub born at the facility, and a clouded leopard cub, showcasing the center’s success in nurturing the next generation of endangered species.

He played with orangutans named Ketchup and Chutney, who were rescued from overcrowded conditions and bonded with elephants while enjoying therapeutic jacuzzis. Other highlights included feeding a giraffe, patting an okapi, and observing rare species like a two-headed snake and a two-headed turtle.

PM Modi released rescued parrots back into the wild, their flight symbolizing Vantara’s ultimate goal of restoring nature’s balance. His engagement with the center’s staff doctors, caregivers, and workers further emphasized the human effort behind this ambitious project.

Vantara’s establishment aligns with India’s growing emphasis on ethical animal welfare and ecological sustainability. The center’s initiatives like breeding programs for critically endangered species such as the caracal and Asiatic lion aim to bolster biodiversity. Its fleet of 75 custom-engineered elephant ambulances, the largest in the world, exemplifies its proactive rescue efforts.

Modi’s visit reinforced India’s position as a leader in global conservation. By highlighting Vantara’s work, he drew attention to the need for coexistence and kindness toward nature a message that resonates beyond borders. The sanctuary collaborates with international organizations like the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), integrating advanced research and global best practices into its operations.

PM Modi’s reflections during his visit carried a deeper plea: for society to reject irresponsibility and embrace compassion. This call echoes Vantara’s ethos, which Anant Ambani has described as a “Sevalaya” rather than a “Chidiyaghar”. Unlike entertainment-focused facilities, Vantara prioritizes rehabilitation, rescue, preservation, and conservation, offering a model that other nations could emulate.

The sanctuary’s recognition with the ‘Prani Mitra’ National Award, India’s highest honor in animal welfare in the corporate category, further validates its impact. PM Modi’s visit brought this vision to the forefront, spotlighting the rescued elephants, lion cubs, and orangutans whose lives have been transformed.

As the world grapples with habitat destruction, poaching, and climate change, Vantara offers a glimmer of hope. It stands as a safe haven where wildlife is not only rescued but revered, reflecting India’s ancient ethos of harmony with nature. Through Modi’s words and Vantara’s deeds, the call is clear kindness to animals is not a choice, but a duty we all share.
