CM kicks off national junior swimming competition in Rajkot
The four-day competition that has been held for the first time in Saurashtra and after 25 years in Gujarat will see a participation of 500 junior swimmers of the age group of 9-12
GOG will develop sports tourism in the state: CM
Kicking off 29th national junior swimming competition at Rajkot today Chief Minster Narendra Modi expressed his resolve to develop sports tourism in Gujarat. “There is a great scope of development for sports tourism and hence the state government desires to link various sports related competitions with tourism”, he said.
The national-level junior swimming competition has been held for the first time in Saurashtra and after a span of 25 years in Gujarat under the auspices of Gujarat State Aquatic Association, a branch of Swimming Federation of India, and Rajkot District Swimming Association in cooperation with NALCO. The four-day competition which is taking place at Sardar Patel swimming pool in Rajkot will see a participation of 500 junior swimmers of the age group of 9-12. Teams from 25 states, apart from the teams of railway and Central Service Sports are taking part in the competition.Welcoming the junior swimmers in Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said that Gujarat is celebrating the present year as Yuva Shakti Varsh to commemorate 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The state will give priority to organizing various sports competitions during this entire year.
He said the state government is giving special attention for developing beach-sports along the 1600 km. coastline of Gujarat. He outlined the state’s surge in swimming and skating and the state’s world record in the game of chess. He also spoke of the state’s planning for setting up a sports university. He expressed desire to develop sports related infrastructure in Gujarat with a view to provide best training and facilities to the sportsmen.
Speaking on the occasion, president of Swimming Federation of India and former Chief Minister of Goa Digambar Kamat expressed happiness for organizing of this swimming competition. He also expressed happiness for Gujarat has put in place the necessary infrastructure for holding international level swimming competitions.Union Mine Minister and president of Gujarat State Swimming Association Dinsha Patel expressed happiness for the organization of this competition in Rajkot district. He said that swimming holds high importance as it has a capacity to save lives of people.
Finance Minister Vajubhai Vala, Rajkot Mayor Janak Kotak, MLAs Govind Patel, Bhanuben Babariya, Deputy Mayor Dipaben Chikani, former MP Vijay Rupani, City BJP president Dhansukhbhai Bhanderi, Rajkot municipal corporation commissioner Ajay Bhadu, Collector Dr. Rajendrakumar, office bearers of Gujarat State Aquatic Association and Rajkot District Swimming Association, contestants and their parents were present on the occasion.
