Social media erupts in joy over news of BJP’s win in Gujarat

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s tryst with the voters of Gujarat was further enhanced when the party romped home to a resounding mandate in the 2012 Gujarat Assembly Elections. Right from the initial trends till the declaration of the final result on 20th December 2012, it was clear that it is the BJP, under the dynamic leadership of Shri Narendra Modi that would form the next Government in the state.

In the run up to the elections when the campaigning was at its peak, Shri Narendra Modi had stated time and again that it is not only the Indian media but also the global media that has its eyes on the Gujarat elections. Yesterday, as the results poured in, these words of Shri Narendra Modi stood vindicated. From the local Gujarati media, other regional media, the national media to the international media, everyone covered the Gujarat elections.

Top leaders across the political spectrum congratulate Shri Modi

To lead a party to a win for three consecutive times is not a small thing and what Shri Modi has achieved is truly phenomenal. With the coming of the results, Shri Modi was not only congratulated by all top BJP leaders, but also leaders from other political parties.

Odisha Chief Minister and leader of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Shri Naveen Patnaik congratulated Shri Modi for the win at the hustings.

Tamil Nadu CM and AIADMK leader Dr. J Jayalalithaa extended her greetings to Shri Modi on the historic win.

Shiv Sena leader Shri Uddhav Thackeray congratulated Shri Modi and pointed out that Shri Modi has won the election overcoming all odds and that he has won the hearts of the people!

Shiromani Akali Dal leader and Deputy CM of Punjab Shri Sukhbir Singh Badal extended his good wishes to Shri Modi. Shri Badal said that Shri Modi’s victory marked the victory of development.

Charismatic Narendra Modi re-elected as Chief Minister in a decisive victory, says TIME as international media notes Gujarat results

The international media followed the run up to the elections very closely and they covered the results with equal enthusiasm. Noting Shri Modi’s victory, TIME magazine pointed out that the charismatic Shri Modi has been re-elected as CM in a decisive mandate. They also termed Shri Modi as someone who played a pivotal role in setting Gujarat on the path of enviable growth.

About Shri Modi’s popularity, TIME wrote, “Few figures in Indian politics have the kind of devoted following that Modi, 62, enjoys today. The feverishly loyal supporters who gave their chief minister another run in office this week believe he has turned the state around, creating a rare, business-friendly environment that has brought money, infrastructure and much needed jobs to this important coastal state.” The magazine noted the path breaking innovation in Shri Modi’s entire campaign including Shri Modi addressing people across various places of Gujarat through 3D technology. TIME also quoted the Chief Minister’s victory blog in its story.

It may be recalled that in March this year Shri Modi had featured on the TIME cover page. He is the only CM to feature on the cover of TIME.

Writing about Shri Modi leading the BJP to a sweeping victory, the New York Times wrote that Shri Modi is fast emerging as a leading challenger to India’s Nehru-Gandhi family. New York Times also notes that Shri Modi’s importance towards good governance and growth finds resonance in a nation where there are new corruption scandals every month and economic growth has considerably slowed.

Writing about Shri Modi’s leadership that played an anchoring role in the BJP’s victory the Los Angeles Times noted, “In Gujarat, one of India’s most pro-business states, Modi is credited with improving infrastructure, offering attractive corporate tax incentives and streamlining red tape, helping make “Vibrant Gujarat” a darling of foreign investors. The state’s annual economic growth has remained around 10% for much of the past decade. Manufacturing accounts for 28% of the state economy, nearly double the average for other states. Gujarat’s literacy rate is among India’s highest and its poverty rate among the lowest.”

Taking note of the spectacular win in Gujarat, the German Newspaper Deutsche Welle wrote that Gujarat has become one of India’s most successful regions economically and that it is a model state for India.

It is not only the west that has noted the electoral victory in Gujarat. China Daily states, “There was little surprise in the results…. His reputation is forged on Gujarat's impressive economic growth, and supporters see him as the only leader charismatic enough to re-invigorate the BJP.”

The Japanese media has hailed Shri Modi’s win too. Media houses that hailed the victory include Reuters Japan. Bloomberg Japan has said that Shri Modi’s victory is due to the development model, which outshines that of the Congress-led UPA’s. Nikkei reports that many Indians want the Gujarat model to be replicated all over India.

Narendra Modi’s victory an emphatic political achievement

Noted intellectual and expert on public policy Mr. Pratap Bhanu Mehta has described Shri Modi’s victory as an emphatic political achievement. Mr. Mehta writes, “He, like a handful of other chief ministers, brilliantly grasped the fact that Indian politics is deeply aspirational. It rewards governance.”

Columnist and avid blogger Mr. Shashi Shekhar cites the above remarks by Mr. Pratap Bhanu Mehta and what he calls a subtle expression of strong endorsement by Professor PV Indiresan (his article dated 14th December 2012 in the Hindu Business Line) to show how the intellectual debate on Shri Narendra Modi has shifted. He calls it a shift that is both real and palpable.

Author and reputed public policy doyen Mr. Bibek Debroy wrote in India Today (issue dated 31st December 2012), “There is no getting away from Narendra Modi’s leadership role in social sector push, empowerment of bureaucracy and insulation from political interference, clamping down on corruption, decentralization, and emphasis on the private sector.” He adds that Gujarat’s growth story was considered as “hype” but since the growth is now reflected in concrete data, it is no longer contested.

Senior fellow at CSDS and founder of Manushi Sangathan Dr. Madhu Purnima Kishwar is all praise for Shri Modi’s victory in the 2012 Gujarat election and she goes a step further to berate the anti-Gujarat elements who have only indulged in negativity for so many years.

Dr. Kishwar lauds Gujarat’s development in agriculture and attributes it extensive irrigation facilities, building of check dams, Khet Talawadi programme, drip irrigation etc. She also notes the success of Jyotigram Yojana and Gujarat’s wonderful roads network. All these factors played a major role in the wide scale support generated for Shri Modi and the BJP, which made the historic victory in 2012 polls possible.

Noted columnist Mr. Swapan Dasgupta opined that Shri Modi’s popularity among the people gave the BJP a cutting edge in the 2012 Gujarat elections. He also writes about Shri Modi’s ability to draw votes from outside the core ideological fold of his party, thus suggesting that people cutting across all communities voted for Shri Modi and the BJP. Mr. Dasgupta concludes by saying that the BJP not only needs Modi but the Modi model to get votes and rejuvenate the party.

Writing about the BJP victory in the 2012 Gujarat polls in the Hindustan Times, Ketaki Ghoghe takes note of role played by the neo-middle class in this victory, arguing that its role was even greater than aspects such as caste and community. She states that Shri Modi stands for this class, which is focused on better living through jobs and enterprise opportunities not food security or employment guarantee schemes offered by the Congress.

It may be recalled that Shri Modi is the first Indian politician to talk about the neo-middle class and is the leader who has spoken about safeguarding the interests and needs of this emerging section of Indian society. The BJP’s Sankalp Patra mentions policies and programmes for this group of society.

Many on social media pointed out how Shri Modi overcame all odds and insults to lead the party to a win and give Gujarat a better future. Many also admired Shri Modi’ philosophy to development and good governance and pointed out that it must be replicated not only in Gujarat but also all over.

Writing on his blog after the results, Shri Modi shared that his agenda in the coming years is to take the development journey of Gujarat to further heights. He assured the people, “We will build a Gujarat where not only you are happy but also where your future generations lead a life of happiness. The journey towards a Bhavya and Divya Gujarat has just begun! The best is yet to come!”

After the election results Shri Modi made 3 posts on Facebook and the 3 posts saw a mammoth 2 lakh likes and over 20,000 comments!
