Shri Narendra Modi congratulates Mary Kom for winning the Bronze Medal at the London Olympics

Being an avid sports follower, Shri Modi has followed the Olympics closely.

Mary Kom’s stellar performance at the ring has delighted India. On the evening of Wednesday, 8th August 2012 Shri Narendra Modi congratulated Mary Kom for winning the Bronze Medal at the London Olympics.

Wishing her, Shri Modi Tweeted, “Hearty congratulations to Mary Kom. She has not only won a bronze but also the hearts of a billion Indians! We are all proud of her.”

Shri Modi himself is a keen follower of sports and has been following the events at the Olympics since they commenced on 27th July. At the start of the Olympics, Shri Modi extended his god wishes to the Indian athletes. He Tweeted,“Wishing the very best to our athletes participating in the London Olympics. I am confident they will make India proud.”

He also wished Gagan Narang, Vijay Kumar, and Saina Nehwal on winning medals in their respective Olympic events.

Shri Modi remains extremely passionate about sport and has always worked towards making sport a mass movement. A fine example of his initiatives can be seen in the annual Khel Mahakumbhs, which are sport extravaganzas held for sportspersons all over Gujarat. The 2011 Khel Mahakumbh witnessed record participation of more than 18.24 lakh athletes and prizes worth Rs. 40 crore were given. For the first time 60,000 specially abled athletes also participated in the event. Khel Mahakumbh 2011 was inaugurated by popular film actor Akshay Kumar.

First such instance that a Prime Minister will attend such a programme at the Headquarters of the Catholic Church in India

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will attend the Christmas Celebrations hosted by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) at the CBCI Centre premises, New Delhi at 6:30 PM on 23rd December.

Prime Minister will interact with key leaders from the Christian community, including Cardinals, Bishops and prominent lay leaders of the Church.

This is the first time a Prime Minister will attend such a programme at the Headquarters of the Catholic Church in India.

Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) was established in 1944 and is the body which works closest with all the Catholics across India.
