Prime Minister’s opening remarks at BRICS Summit

Addressing the BRICS leaders, PM Narendra Modi today said that BRICS nations have been a voice for peace, reform, reason and purposeful action. The Prime Minister said that the new global institutions that have been built complement the existing architecture. “The New Development Bank and Contingency Reserve Arrangement stand out”, added the PM.

PM Modi emphasized that BRICS must play an active role in setting a direction that supports our common aspirations and goals. He said that simultaneous development of all BRICS nations is the best bet for global growth.

The Prime Minister spoke of the critical challenges that our world is confronted with. “If new drivers of growth have to take root, there must be unhindered flow of skilled talent, ideas, technology and capital across borders”, the PM remarked.

Speaking on terrorism, the Prime Minister said that it is the most serious direct threat to our economic prosperity. “Tragically, the mother-ship of terrorism is a country in India’s neighbourhood”, stated PM Modi. He called on BRICS country to work together for early adoption of CCIT, step up practical cooperation against terrorism.

PM Narendra Modi stated that the path laid down by the SDGs or Agenda 2030 is a valuable blueprint of hope and India's own development priorities are aligned with them. He added, “India has recently ratified the Paris Climate Agreement. We are committed to a harmonious balance between development and climate change.”

The PM also expressed concern over non-conventional security challenges, from threats on cyberspace and piracy on high seas to human trafficking.
